Internationally Recognized Power System Expertise
TransGrid Solutions is headed by Dr. Mohamed Rashwan who has over 35 years of experience in the field of power systems, HVDC transmission and the application of power electronics. He is recognized internationally as a world expert in the field. Dr. Rashwan is a Fellow of the IEEE, a distinguished member of Cigre and is currently the chairman of the Canadian National Committee of Cigre.
Dr. Mohamed Rashwan, P.Eng
Dr. Mohamed Rashwan is the President of TransGrid Solutions (TGS) in Winnipeg. He has been active in the area of HVDC and Power Electronics for more than 35 years. His career started with Manitoba Hydro in the area of HVDC. Dr. Rashwan is a Fellow of IEEE and a distinguished member of CIGRE. He also received the CIGRE Technical Committee Award. He has been active in CIGRE technical activities since 1983 and he served as the Canadian Representative on Study Committee B4. He is still involved in Study Committee B4 as a member of its working groups and its advisory group. Dr. Rashwan has been a member of the executive of CIGRE Canada since 1994 and he is currently the Chairman of CIGRE Canada.
In 2010, Dr. Rashwan received the prestigious Uno Lamm award from the IEEE in recognition of outstanding contributions, dedication and leadership for the integration and operation of HVDC in the power system and the advancement of new ideas in the HVDC technology.
Dr. Mojtaba Mohaddes
Mojtaba Mohaddes received his BSc. and MSc. degrees both in electrical engineering from Ferdowsi University, Iran and his Ph.D. from University of Manitoba in Canada. He is currently a director and vice president of TransGrid Solutions. He started his career in1986 as a lecturer in Ferdowsi and Azad Universities in Iran. He was with Brandt Consultants Inc. in Winnipeg, Manitoba from 1997 till 2003 when he joined TGS. He has been involved with numerous HVDC and FACTS projects, ranging from feasibility studies, control system analysis and design, simulation studies, technical specification preparation and tender review. Dr. Mohaddes' main area of expertise is in the development of controls for HVDC and FACTS and power system simulation, in particular in the area of time-domain electromagnetic transient modelling.
Dr. Doug Chapman, P.Eng.
Doug Chapman has over 35 years experience in power system engineering. He has held positions with responsibility for the planning of generation controls and of HVDC systems and associated ac system equipment. He managed a technical group with responsibility for system limit studies for Manitoba Hydro. He has also been a member of and Chair of the MAPP Reliability Council and a member of a NERC standards drafting team related to system limits. He has been involved in EPRI research related to the computer modeling of advanced HVDC systems in steady state and transient stability simulation.
He holds a B.Sc. (EE) degree from the University of Manitoba and a Ph.D. in control systems from Imperial College, University of London. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Manitoba. He is a senior member of the IEEE and a registered professional engineering in the province of Manitoba.
Dr. Udaya D. Annakkage, P.Eng.
Udaya D. Annakkage (M'95-SM'04) received the B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, in 1982, and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Manchester, U.K., in 1984 and 1987 respectively. He is a Professor at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. His research interests are power system stability and control, security assessment and control, operation of restructured power systems, and power system simulation. He is an editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems and a Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Manitoba, Canada.
Rebecca Ostash, P.EngRebecca Brandt
Rebecca Ostash received her B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Manitoba in 2001. She is currently a System Studies Engineer with TransGrid Solutions Inc. Previously, she worked for Manitoba Hydro, mainly in the System Planning department. She has been a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba since 2004. Rebecca has a background of experience in system planning studies, with particular focus on HVDC, FACTS, wind and other generator interconnections as well as AC transmission planning studies. She also has significant experience developing custom stability models for HVDC and SVCs, with particular emphasis on power system stability software package PSSE. She is the author of several papers related to this subject.
Dan Kell, MSc, P.Eng
Dan Kell received his B.Sc. and M.Sc degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Manitoba in 1999 and 2005 respectively. He is currently a Power System Engineer with TransGrid Solutions. Previously, he worked for Manitoba Hydro and the Manitoba HVDC Research Centre. professional electrical engineer with a wide range of engineering experiences including utility and international consultancy activities, with a focus on HVDC and FACTS. These projects have ranged from feasibility studies, technical specification preparation, tender review and commissioning to equipment assessment and studies involving equipment upgrades.
This practical field experience is coupled with a great deal of experience in power system simulation, in particular in the area of time-domain electromagnetic transient modelling.
Dr. Bathiya Jayasekara, P.Eng
Bathiya Jayasekara received his B.Sc. and P.hD. degrees in Electrical Engineering at the University of Moratuwa in 2000 and the University of Manitoba in 2006, respectively. He joined TransGrid Solutions in 2006 and is currently working with the system studies group. He has many years of research experience in the area of power system stability and control. Since joining TransGrid Solutions, he has been involved in many system study projects involving stability type simulations and electro-magnetic transient type simulations. He is a registered professional engineer.
Dr. Chandana Karawita
Chandana Karawita received the B.Sc. (Eng) degree from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 2002 and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Manitoba, Canada in 2006 and 2009, respectively. He is currently working for TransGrid Solutions as a power systems studies specialist. Chandana has performed power systems planning studies in HVDC and HVac integrations and wind power generation using PSS/E and PSCAD software packages. He specializes in small signal stability assessment and power system stabilizer tuning, HVDC interaction studies and sub synchronous oscillation studies of power systems. He was instrumental in developing a software package to analyze sub synchronous interactions in power systems.
Siavash Zoroofi
Siavash Zoroofi received his BSc. And MSc. degrees in electric power engineering from K.N.Toosi University (Iran) and Chalmers University of technology (Sweden) respectively. He is currently a Power System engineer with Transgridsolutions with wide range of engineering practices in power systems. He was involved in several power quality studies, test and commissioning of high power converters, industrial equipment protection and relay coordination studies, test and commissioning of variable speed drives.
Bonnie Bell
Bonnie Bell joined the team at TransGrid Solutions in early 2009. She is responsible for all of the administrative functions of the company. Bonnie has over 28 years experience in the accounting field and office management. She was previously employed in the Finance Department at Air Canada.
